Overview of Chapel Porth
Chapel Porth is a small sandy cove at the bottom of a picturesque mining valley on Cornwall’s North Coast, situated between St Agnes and Porthtowan.
The beach all but disappears at high tide but at low tide, it opens up to create a vast expanse of sand running from St Agnes Head to Porthtowan.
The sand levels can vary greatly throughout the year, affected by storms and tides. When the sand levels are low there is a lot of exposed rocks and shingle at the entrance to the beach.
At low water, large pools around the base of the cliffs are left by the falling tide creating paddling pools perfect for younger children.
How do you get to Chapel Porth Beach?
If you are travelling by car there is a National Trust beach car park adjacent to the beach (free for members). In the summer months, an overflow car park is in operation in a field a few hundred meters up the hill.
Alternatively, you can walk on the coast path from St Agnes Head and Wheal Coates to the East or Porthtowan in the West. At low tide, it is possible to walk along the beach from Porthtowan, but check the tide times and take great care not to get cut off.
Is Chapel Porth Beach good for surfing?
It’s not for beginners, but if you can negotiate some dangerous rips, and handle yourself in an often crowded local lineup, the exposed beach break at Chapel Porth delivers reliable surf throughout the year.

Yes, the Capel Porth beach cafe, famous for its Hedgehog Icecreams also serves up hot and cold drinks, cakes, snacks, breakfast and lunches to take away, with some outdoor seating available. Is Chapel Porth Beach good for small children?
This beach has everything you need for small children, close to the car park, beach toilets, cafe, lifeguards and rock pools. Like much of Cornwall’s North Coast, the sea can be very rough here though so take great care and only swim between the red and yellow flags.
Are there beach lifeguards at Chapel Porth?
Yes, this is an RNLI Lifeguarded beach with lifeguards on duty in the summer months from 10 am to 6.00 pm.

Is Chapel Porth Beach dog friendly?
Yes, this is a great beach for dogs at low tide with the vast stretch of sand giving dogs plenty of room to exercise. There is a seasonal dog ban in place in the summer from 1st July to 31st August between the hours of 10 am to 6 pm.
